La Fontaine Garden

This coastal seaside project is located on the exposed St Ouens coast of Jersey. This project is extremely exposed and battles constantly with the wind and salty air.

The site is sat on top of sand which makes planting choices challenging.

The brief was to create a coastal Mediterranean garden that was relaxing and useful. A large deck was installed for ease of movement from the house to the parking at the back and front of the property.

The grasses provide movement and a calming atmosphere all year round and the colour palette was kept simple and seasonal with whites, blues and purples and allowing perennials to be left standing over winter with their dried stems and seed heads.

The hard materials were locally sourced or came from a small local business.

The dining area was sunken to shelter from the wind and to provide privacy from the surrounding houses on the hillside. A tall fence perimeter was installed to provide further privacy. A row of Carpinus betulus 'Frans Fontaine' was planted to create a further visual barrier.

Because this site was located in the Jersey National Park, emphasis on natural looking native, near-native, and naturalised plants were used.
