St. Andrews Shelter
This design was a result of Storm Ciarán that affected many of the trees in Jersey. A lot of which have been cut down and used for various projects, this being one of them. We were asked by Jersey Government to design a shelter for the parents in the park.
We didn't use any harsh chemicals or sharp materials in creating this shelter. The wood has been cut straight from the tree into slices 40mm thick with the varying widths of the board based on the cut in the trunk.
The wood will be allowed to age and warp as it naturally dries out adding to the natural look of this park project.
It was lovely to work with like minded people who were passionate about what they were doing in helping aid the republic best they can.
Designing a shelter out of a 700mm thick tree trunk several metres long was a really interesting challenge.
We started by first creating the two seats, we initially went for a design that had a back rest. After some thought and a look at the dimensions the seat wasn't going to work.
As you can see we changed it into a flat square seat that has more room to sit down. As well as this it provides a sturdier foundation for the whole shelter as that is its only point of security.
